Why I'm Running

Hi, my name is Emily but most people call me Em.

My parents (and other retired and retiring people) deserve to live in a city where they can age with dignity and afford to live in town, near children and grandkids.

My sister & her husband (and other young families) deserve to live in a city where they feel a sense of community & belonging.

Kids (like my 5-year old niece and 2 year old nephew) deserve to grow up in a city where they are safe and feel comfortable being their true authentic selves. A city where they have access to clean parks, can play sports, go to festivals, you name it.

Those are my “whys” - because the decisions made on City Council impact real people and families.

As the youngest current City Councilmember and one of the only renters on Council, representation matters.

I'd be honored to earn your vote.

ISSUES

Since being appointed to City Council, I have been able to work with residents and City leaders to address several challenges facing our community:

  • Housing: Balancing growth with community character, affordable housing, and thoughtful zoning regulations that meet the needs of residents.

    • My goal is to support our City providing a variety of affordable housing types so seniors, families, and young professionals can afford to stay in our community as prices continue to rise.

  • Public Safety: Enhancing police and fire services to address  both every day safety concerns, like speeding, and tackle systemic community safety challenges.

    • As a survivor who has dedicated nearly a decade of my career working with victims of crime, it is paramount that we address community safety concerns.

  • Economic Development: Supporting local businesses and balancing affordability for residents as we face unprecedented economic hardships. Our zoning and permitting processes shouldn't create more barriers to attracting small businesses to our community.

  • Infrastructure Improvements: Managing traffic congestion and public works infrastructure, and expanding the variety of transportation options for residents of all ages.

    • Upgrading roads, public transportation, non-motorized transportation options, and utilities to accommodate growth.

  • Environmental Concerns: Addressing sustainability, conservation efforts, and climate change impacts.

    • Preserving our shorelines and prioritizing clean air are pivotal to maintaining the historic charm that we all know and love.

  • Parks and Recreation: Expanding and maintaining public spaces and recreational facilities for youth, seniors, and families

    • Like the Sports Complex project that we’re excited to continue progress on, along with the recent opening of Doris Heritage Park.
